The most practical use of Qi Men Dun Jia is “selecting time and direction” — at the right time, head in the right direction, and do the right thing.

Everyday ways to use Qi Men:

1. Important meetings/interviews: find the direction where the Open, Rest, or Life door sits, and arrive at that direction early to wait.

2. Negotiation/contracts: find the direction of the Rest door and Liu He, and sit in the auspicious direction yourself.

3. Seeking wealth/business: find the direction of the Life door and Zhi Fu, and head in that direction.

4. Exams/interviews: find the direction of the View door, Tian Fu, or Tian Xin.

5. Seeking medical care: find the direction of Tian Xin or Tian Rui, and avoid the Death door.

Qi Men patterns — classic auspicious and inauspicious structures:

Auspicious patterns:

• Green Dragon Returns (Qing Long Hui Shou): Wu + Bing, great fortune for investment and wealth-seeking

• Flying Bird Falls into Nest (Fei Niao Die Xue): Bing + Wu, fortune and planning both auspicious

• Three Mysteries Gain Officer (San Qi De Shi): Yi Bing Ding on a door, noble help arrives

• Nine Concealments patterns (Jiu Dun Ge Ju): Tian Concealment, Earth Concealment, Human Concealment, etc., all matters greatly auspicious

Inauspicious patterns:

• Tai Bai into Ying (Tai Bai Ru Ying): Geng + Bing, thief comes, guard against theft and deception

• Ying into Tai Bai (Ying Ru Tai Bai): Bing + Geng, thief leaves, things shift

• Flying Stem pattern (Fei Gan Ge): Geng + Geng, fights and conflict, road blocked
