Five-Element Generation and Overcoming — How to Read Chart Balance
💡 Reading time: ~8 minutes | Series: Bazi Series (Article 4/20)
The Five-Element theory is a cornerstone of Chinese culture and the foundation of Bazi. Once you understand how the elements generate and overcome each other, you can read whether a chart is in balance or out of balance.
Five-Element Generation (cycle): Wood feeds Fire → Fire creates Earth → Earth bears Metal → Metal collects Water → Water nourishes Wood
Five-Element Overcoming (checks): Wood parts Earth → Earth absorbs Water → Water quenches Fire → Fire melts Metal → Metal cuts Wood
Signs of an element being too strong:
-
Wood excess: kind but stubborn, prone to liver and gallbladder issues
-
Fire excess: passionate but impatient, prone to cardiovascular issues
-
Earth excess: honest but slow, prone to spleen and stomach issues
-
Metal excess: decisive but harsh, prone to respiratory issues
-
Water excess: clever but anxious, prone to kidney and urinary issues
Signs of an element being too weak:
-
Wood weak: lacks conviction, easily intimidated
-
Fire weak: lacks passion, prone to pessimism
-
Earth weak: lacks security, prone to suspicion
-
Metal weak: lacks drive, prone to indecision
-
Water weak: lacks wisdom, prone to short-term thinking
The highest state in Bazi is “Zhong He” (balance) — the five elements in equilibrium, neither too much nor too little. But most people’s charts are skewed. That’s when post-birth adjustments come in: direction, color, career, name — all of which can be used to balance the chart.
