Bazi Beginner — Understanding Your Birth-Time Code

💡 Reading time: ~8 minutes | Series: Bazi Series (Article 1/20)

Bazi, also known as the “Four Pillars of Destiny,” is a system that maps a person’s birth year, month, day, and hour into a chart of four pillars. Each pillar contains one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch, totaling eight characters — hence the name “Bazi” (Eight Characters).

The Four Pillars

  • Year Pillar: represents ancestors, family background, early-life fortune

  • Month Pillar: represents parents, siblings, youth

  • Day Pillar: represents yourself and your spouse, middle age (the most important)

  • Hour Pillar: represents children, later-life fortune

The first step in learning Bazi is to cast a chart. You can use a perpetual calendar or an online chart-casting tool: enter your birth time, and you’ll get your Bazi chart. Remember: the birth hour matters a lot, because the hour pillar affects both the chart and the major luck cycles.

At the core of Bazi is the balance of the Five Elements. Every Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch carries an elemental attribute. By analyzing the strength of the elements and the way they generate or overcome each other, you can read someone’s personality, health, wealth, relationships, and more.
